I am Guy and I’m glad you have landed here at MyHelpSource.
MyHelpSource is one of my favorite projects because it’s all about helping you build a better YOU.
My tag line — Build a Better You — 5 Minutes at a Time — serves both to tell my readers what they should expect inside and to keep me on track.
I’m somewhat of a short-attention-span guy, so every time I open MyHelpSource to write or post content, I’m reminded of my mission to provide compelling, purposeful content in chunks that can be consumed in 5-minutes or less.
Thank you for dropping by!
They say we all have a story to tell. I have a few years behind me and lots of stories, but here’s the nutshell version (you can see more on my About page at GuyEWood.com).
- I married my high school sweetheart just a few months after we graduated (other than becoming a Christian, marrying Vickie is the smartest thing I ever did!)
- I retired from the United States Air Force after 28 years of service
- We have three children — whom we homeschooled all the way through until they went to college, by the way (feel free to ask me about homeschooling — we’ve helped several families get started)
- Our kids have blessed us with four grandchildren (I love being their Pops!)
- Originally from the Los Angeles area, Vickie and I have moved more than 25 times, based on the needs of the Air Force and other jobs — five US states, Japan, Germany, and Ethiopia
- We’re not ready to settle down, so although we both still work (remotely), we are full-time cruisers on our boat and we travel every chance we get
I’ve had many jobs over the years, including: lot boy at a recreational vehicle retailer, pool boy at a private club, house framer, firefighter, restaurant remodeler, hospital products and pharmaceutical salesperson (I hate to brag, but I was VERY good in this industry), stock broker and financial advisor (I was also good at this, but I made very little money because I made it my mission to point my clients to the products with little to no commissions — ask me someday how to minimize your investment and insurance costs), military officer, corporate and military trainer, high school and university teacher, curriculum writer, and commercial writer.
I could add to this list, but I think I’ve made my point. I’ve done a lot of things.
I’m the proverbial jack of all trades and master of one: Storytelling.
Whether I’m writing or speaking, I just love to tell stories. I love to sell ideas and feed imaginations.
So that’s primarily what I do now. I tell stories and sell ideas in a variety of venues.
I post content here related to business, with an emphasis on leadership, followership, team-building, business writing, sales, marketing, online entrepreneurship, working remotely, corporate training, and the like. This is also the primary site I use to market my own services as a freelance writer.
Build a Better You — 5 Minutes at a Time. Read and subscribe to my blog so you never miss a post. I write about spiritual growth, self-improvement, relationships, marriage, friendships, and much more to help you on your journey. One thing I love about this site is that it helps me too!
This is where I share stories, photos, and videos about living and working aboard our trawler, ONWARD. We live small — it’s an amazing feeling to free yourself of stuff — and our “office” is tiny, but our views are great and we can move pretty much any time we want.
You’ll notice that these sites are in various stages of construction and population right now. I am in the process of moving them from other servers and platforms, so you’ll be able to watch them grow over the next several months. I’m a one-man show here, so it won’t be fast.
It will be good, though, so please subscribe to the sites you’re interested in and I’ll send you an email whenever I post new content. Please don’t worry about being overwhelmed by emails from me, as you will likely receive an average of no more than one email per day, even if you subscribe to all three blogs.
Oh, and so you know, there is nobody on earth who dislikes spam more than I do. I promise to never share, sell, or otherwise misuse your email address. I value your trust way too much to do anything ugly, and every email I send will have a simple unsubscribe button for you to use if you ever want to opt out.
I also teach undergraduate and graduate courses online. While I’ve taught a wide variety of courses over the past couple of decades — in both online and traditional settings — my primary courses now are for graduate programs and they revolve around leadership, followership, building effective teams, organizational development, and inter-cultural (international) leadership.
On the Horizon
In addition to the sites I mentioned above, I am also building niche sites on which I’ll share information and resources related to a variety of topics.
Websites in the hopper even as I type this: how to select and care for your new dog (WhichDog101); where to find and how to land a job as a truck driver (TruckerJobsHQ); and, where to buy fair trade goods (ItsOnlyFairTrade).
There is much, much more coming in addition to these projects, including more niche sites (I have some fascinating and helpful ideas rattling around in my brain) and a some eBooks (some of which I’ll offer my readers for FREE).
Here’s the deal. You won’t want to miss these things, so keep in touch — that is, subscribe to one or more of my sites — and you’ll be the first to know when I launch new sites or publish new materials of interest.
I wrote these values to guide my professional and personal actions many years ago, and with the exception of a few minor tweaks, they’ve served me well since I first put them to paper in 1992.
This is what you can expect from me:
I Am a Servant Leader
I Act Responsibly
I Am Customer Driven
I Am Dedicated to Continuous Improvement
I Am Entrepreneurial
I Am Driven by Principles, Not Popularity
